Great Graphic Designer – Steiff Geissbuhler

Steff Geissbuhler is a pre-eminent designer of logos and corporate identity programmes on the global stage. For over three decades, Mr. Geissbuhler has been a prominent figure in the field of corporate identity design. Initially serving as one of three partners at the renowned firm of Chermayeff & Geismar Inc., he later became the co-founder of C&G Partners. His clientele has included prominent entities such as NBC, Merck, Time Warner, National Public Radio, Telemundo, Union Pacific, and Conrad Hotels, among others.

Steff Geissbuhler was born in 1942 and received his education at the School of Art and Design in Basel, Switzerland. He currently resides in New York.

AIGA winneris known for creating graphics and illustrations that express the character of large organizations, including the May Department Store Company and the IBM building in New York. Some of his other major commissions include the Smithsonian Institution’s Bicentennial exhibition, “A Nation of Nations,” a traveling exhibit marking the 100th anniversary of the American Chemical Society, and the identity for the New York Public Library’s centennial celebrations.

darien logo by SteffMr. Geissbuhler’s cultural work includes the identity system, sign program, and print collateral for the New Victory Theatre at TimesSquare; a poster series for New York City’s Department of Cultural Affairs; and an identity program for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre. In 2004, he designed a display of Olympics photography by Sports Illustrated, “Faster, Higher, Stronger,” which was the inaugural exhibit at New York’s Time Warner Centre.

   

Steff Geissbuhler is among America’s most celebrated designers of integrated brand and corporate identity programs. His work for a broad spectrum of international and national clients includes identity systems for NBC, Merck, Time Warner Cable, Telemundo, Voice of America, Toledo Museum of Art, National Parks of New York Harbor, Crane & Co., Calamos Investments, Conrad Hotels and Morgan Stanley Smith Barney.

Steff Geissbuhler has designed architectural graphics for the IBM building in New York City; a comprehensive signage system for the Universities of Pennsylvania and Connecticut; printed materials for the Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre, Mobil, Philip Morris, Cummins Engines and Union Pacific. Other commissions include the creation of graphics for a new identity and for the New York Public Library, as well as for the New Victory Theatre. In 2005, Mr. Geissbuhler was awarded the American Institute of Graphic Arts Medal in recognition of his significant and sustained contributions to design excellence and the advancement of the profession. Additionally, he has been the recipient of the U.S. Federal Achievement Design Award, as well as several accolades from the Art Directors Club and the International Poster Biennales. Steff Geissbuhler has held the position of President of the United States of America for the Alliance Graphique Internationale and has also served on the Board of the American Institute of Graphic Arts. He has previously served as president of the New York chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA).

Steff Geissbuhler has been the recipient of numerous design awards, including the AIGA Medal, the US Federal Achievement Design Award, the US Presidential and Director of Education Award from the Alliance Graphique Internationale, the title of Professor Emeritus from the AIGA New York, and two terms on the national board of the AIGA. Additionally, he has taught at the Philadelphia College of Art, The Cooper Union New York, Yale University School of Art and Architecture (New Haven, Connecticut), and the Rhode Island School of Design (Providence, Rhode Island).
