NBA Logo Review

The NBA Logo: An Eternal Logo

Not many companies can boast the same logo for life, and those companies who never need to change their logo are definitely companies that are doing quite well. It takes a lot to be one of these companies and the NBA Logo is a perfect example. With a logo that so perfectly fits the company’s mission, why would one ever change it?

The great thing about the NBA Logo is the fact that it displays the entire company within a single, simple photo. The colors are bright, which represent the fast pace of the game as well as the excitement.NBA Logo, original NBA logo, first NBA logo

If you take a closer look at the logo, you will notice that the person in the photo is dribbling the ball; which also attributes to the fast-pace of the photo. The sport has so much to do with the ball staying close to the player and why it was chosen over a photo of someone shooting. This represents team work.

NBA Logo History

In the year 1969, The National Basketball Association was trying their hardest to compete against the American Basketball Association. They felt they needed to make a change; and fast. The NBA got in contact with Alan Siegel (founder of Siegel+Gale) to help them create the perfect logo to represent their growing company.

While it was a tough decision, the future of the NBA Logo has proven to be quite bright and it shows no sign of slowing down.

Pictured In the NBA Logo

Siegel looked through old photos from Sport Magazine and a picture of Jerry West caught his eye. The picture seemed to capture everything the NBA was about in a single moment; which is exactly what he thought the NBA Logo should be.

Jerry West is also known by many as Mr. Clutch. He lived in West Virginia and joined the Minneapolis Lakers in 1960. Later, he moved to Los Angeles with his team and for the next 14 years had a very successful career. Jerry is known as one of the best guards in basketball history.

West retired in 1974 but his legacy will live on forever. If one day he is no longer remembered for his playing, he will continue to live on within the NBA Logo.Jerry West, NBA Logo, Jerry West Featured On The NBA Logo

While the NBA doesn’t want to admit that the photo is based on this picture of Jerry West, it’s hard not to notice the similarities. The reasoning behind this may be because the company wants the logo to represent the entire NBA as a whole and not just a single person.

To give you a better idea of just how popular the NBA Logo is, look at this statistic: In a single year, this one image makes the NBA about $3 Billion. Not many logos can boast that kind of money in such a short period of time.

While many people think it’s a good idea that the NBA Logo be changed, it doesn’t seem to be something that will happen anytime soon.
